A motor shield is a circuit which is used to drive motors.In any microcontroller,generally the output current is not sufficient to drive a high power dc motor.If you connect a dc motor directly to a microcontroller i/o pins,then it may draw more current from the microcontroller and thus it may damage the microcontroller.That is why,to drive motors using microcontroller like arduino ,we need a motor shield.Thus the motor shield will help to drive motors.
There are various types of motor shield available in the market .
Depending upon the current requirement to the motors,buyers have to select the motor shield.One of the most used motor shield is adafruit motor shield using l239D ic.This is commonly used in most of the electronic projects.It has ability to drive 4 dc motors as well as it can drive stepper and servo motor only..
